Wintering in a motorhome in the Axarquía is one of the best options on the Costa del Sol: mild winters, with highs of around 17 °C and lows of 7-8 °C in January according to AEMET, towns that are lived in all year round and the mountains just minutes from the sea. The district covers the eastern Costa del Sol, from Rincón de la Victoria to Nerja, and Torrox-Costa sits right in the middle, with a flat seafront promenade and services close at hand.
We'll tell you what winter is like here, which towns suit a long stay, what to do from November to March and what you should know about where to stay overnight with your motorhome. We're writing from Torrox-Costa, where every winter we see the same seasonal neighbours come back to their pitch.
Why winter in a motorhome in the Axarquía
The Axarquía is the eastern part of the province of Málaga. Along the coast you get one beach, cliff, watchtower and promenade after another; behind them, just a few kilometres inland, rise the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, which form the backdrop and give the area a landscape very different from the western coast.
For spending the winter, that adds up to several advantages:
- Mild climate. AEMET's reference station is at Málaga airport, about 50 km away: in January it records an average high of 16.8 °C and an average low of 7.4 °C, with around 180 hours of sunshine.
- Life all year round. Torrox, Nerja, Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga aren't summer-only resorts: there are markets, tapas bars, health centres and shops open in January.
- Flat promenades. Torrox-Costa is completely flat and has a long seafront promenade, as does Torre del Mar, with about 4 km of promenade and a cycle lane.
- Sea and mountains. In 20-30 minutes you go from the beach to white mountain villages and hiking trails.
- Less hustle than in the west. There's less traffic and less development than between Torremolinos and Marbella.

Winter month by month on the eastern coast
These are the climate normals (1981-2010) for the Málaga airport station. On the Axarquía coast the figures are very similar; inland, in the mountain villages, nights are noticeably colder.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 20.1 °C | 11.3 °C | 100 | 5,6 | 172 |
| December | 17.5 °C | 8.9 °C | 100 | 6,6 | 160 |
| January | 16.8 °C | 7.4 °C | 69 | 5,8 | 180 |
| February | 17.7 °C | 8.2 °C | 60 | 4,8 | 180 |
| March | 19.6 °C | 9.8 °C | 52 | 4,0 | 222 |

Rain falls on just a few days, sometimes heavily, especially in November and December. Between spells you usually get runs of sunny days, with cool mornings and T-shirt weather at midday. To see how it compares with other parts of Spain, there's a comparison in our post on wintering in a motorhome in southern Spain.
Coastal towns for spending the winter
Torrox-Costa
It's the centre of the Axarquía coast and one of the liveliest places in the district in winter, with many residents from northern Europe. It has a long promenade with restaurants and beach bars, the Torrox lighthouse and, next to it, the dog beach, where dogs can run off the lead and swim. Everything is flat, so it's easy to get around on foot or by bike. Our post on the beaches of Torrox covers them one by one.

Nerja
About 10 minutes from Torrox-Costa. Its centre revolves around the Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint over the sea, and the square next to it; on the outskirts is the Cueva de Nerja. It's more touristy than Torrox and very lively in winter, with sunny terraces at midday. Parking a motorhome in the centre is tricky: better to go by car, bus or bike.

Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga
Torre del Mar has a seafront promenade of about 4 kilometres with a cycle lane and plenty of restaurants, and nearby is the El Ingenio shopping centre, handy for a big shop. Vélez-Málaga, the district capital, lies inland and has an old town and all the administrative services.
Algarrobo Costa and Rincón de la Victoria
Algarrobo Costa, about 15 minutes away, is smaller and quieter. Rincón de la Victoria, close to Málaga, is almost a commuter town for the city, with a seafront promenade and the Cueva del Tesoro.
Inland villages and nature for day trips
Winter is the best time for walking in the Axarquía: no heat and no crowds. A few ideas for weekdays:
- Torrox Pueblo, about 6 km from the coast: white houses and the Plaza de la Constitución for a coffee or some tapas among the locals.
- Frigiliana, one of the prettiest villages in the mountains, with narrow sloping streets and sea views. Trails into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park start from here.
- Cómpeta, known for its food and local produce, surrounded by mountain trails.
- The Gran Senda de Málaga (GR 249), which crosses the province in stages and has sections between Vélez-Málaga and Torrox and between Torrox and Nerja, according to the APTA Axarquía Costa del Sol guide.
For the mountain villages, a car is better than a motorhome: the roads are narrow and winding, and parking at the top isn't always easy.
Festivals and things to do in winter
The best-known event of the winter is the Día de las Migas in Torrox, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía by the regional government in 1999 (BOJA no. 64 of 1999). It's held in December, usually on the Sunday before Christmas: migas are cooked in huge pans and shared out among everyone there, with music and a festive atmosphere in the village. Check the exact date each year with Torrox town hall or on andalucia.org.
Besides the festivals, winter is a good time for the towns' weekly street markets, visiting the Cueva de Nerja without the summer queues or a trip to Málaga for the museums (the Museo Picasso, the port and the old town are about 45 minutes away).
Where to stay overnight with your motorhome in the Axarquía
The general rules are those of the DGT (Spanish traffic authority): a motorhome can park like any other vehicle, but local councils can limit parking time and ban camping on urban streets (Instruction PROT 2026/04). In the Axarquía some municipalities tightened their bylaws years ago; Rincón de la Victoria, for example, amended its own to fine camping on public roads, as reported by the INAP.
For stays of weeks or months, the sensible choice is a motorhome aire or a campsite. In Andalusia, overnight motorhome areas are regulated by Decree 26/2018 on tourist campsites.
From Milucar: distances in the Axarquía
Milucar is at Avenida del Peñoncillo 61, in Torrox-Costa, next to the N-340 coast road (exit 940 off the A-7, Torrox/Cómpeta). The beach is less than 100 metres away and the centre of Torrox-Costa about 2 km.
| Destination | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Torrox Pueblo | about 6 km | about 10 min |
| Nerja centre | about 7 km | about 10 min |
| Algarrobo Costa | about 10 km | about 15 min |
| Cueva de Nerja | about 11 km | about 15 min |
| Frigiliana | about 12 km | about 20 min |
| Cómpeta | about 20 km | about 30 min |
| Torre del Mar | about 21 km | about 20 min |
| Vélez-Málaga | about 21 km | about 20 min |
| Rincón de la Victoria | about 36 km | about 30 min |

In a motorhome, allow a bit longer. The bus stops in front of the aire, on the coast road, and from Torrox-Costa bus station there are ALSA coaches to Málaga and Granada.

For a winter stay, Milucar is open 365 days a year, with Wi-Fi included, metered 16 A electricity, washing machine and dryer, showers and a service point for emptying and filling up with water. There's a small supermarket 400 metres away and big ones less than 2 km away, plus a shopping service with delivery to your pitch. In low season, which is all year except Easter (Semana Santa) and summer, there's a discount from 30 nights: details under rates.
