Travelling by motorhome with a dog along the Costa del Sol is easy if you know where dogs are allowed and where they aren't. Near Torrox there are two official dog beaches, the Torrox one by the lighthouse and the one in Torre del Mar, plus plenty of walks through white villages and the sierra where your dog comes along on the lead. The places that don't allow dogs are the Cueva de Nerja and the Caminito del Rey, so it's best to take turns for those visits.
This guide is for anyone arriving in the Axarquía, the eastern part of Málaga province, with their home on wheels and their dog, who wants to spend a few days or weeks without leaving the dog shut in. I'll tell you which papers to bring, which dog beaches there are in Málaga near Torrox, which routes work well with a dog and how to organise yourself from a fixed base.
Before you set off: papers and basic rules
If you are coming from another European Union country, your dog needs the same as for any trip within the EU: a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and the EU pet passport. The first rabies vaccination must be given far enough in advance of the trip. The current requirements are on the official page Travelling with pets within the EU; check it before you leave, because the rules change.
Once in Spain, bear three things in mind:
- Animal welfare law. The Law 7/2023 regulates pet ownership throughout the country. Among other things, it does not allow pets to be left loose or unsupervised in public spaces.
- Municipal bylaws. Each town council decides where dogs can go on its beaches and promenades. What applies in Torrox may not apply in Nerja or Vélez-Málaga.
- Potentially dangerous dogs. If your dog falls into that category, Andalusian regulations also apply (licence, insurance and a muzzle in public spaces). Check them before your trip.
Always carry the pet passport or health record, a short lead for villages and a long one for the dog beach, bags, a collapsible water bowl and plenty of water. In summer, a wet towel in the motorhome helps more than you'd think.

Dog beaches in Málaga near Torrox
Dog beaches in Málaga are few and spread across the province, so having two less than half an hour away is a clear advantage of the Axarquía. On the other beaches, municipal bylaws usually restrict or ban dogs, especially in the bathing season. Before heading to an ordinary beach, check the local bylaw or ask at the tourist office.
| Dog beach | Where it is | From Milucar | What it has |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torrox dog beach | Next to the Torrox lighthouse, near the mouth of the Torrox river | About 2 km (5 min by car) | Stretch of coast where dogs can run off the lead and swim |
| Torre del Mar dog beach (Vélez-Málaga) | Western end of Torre del Mar beach, El Mortero section, next to the Vélez river | About 21 km (20 min) | Fenced-off, signposted area, drinking fountain, dog toilet area, dog shower, play park, bins; lifeguard in season only |
Torrox dog beach
This is the closest one. It is next to the Torrox lighthouse, a stretch of coast where dogs can run off the lead and go in the water. The shore here is coarse, more stones than fine sand, so for dogs with sensitive paws it's best to go early or late in the day, when the ground isn't hot. You'll find more detail on this and the other beaches in the municipality in Torrox beaches, including the dog beach.

Torre del Mar dog beach
Vélez-Málaga Town Council set aside a fenced-off stretch as a dog beach at the western end of Torre del Mar beach, in the area known as El Mortero, from the left bank of the Vélez river towards Torre del Mar. According to the council website, this area is not classed as a bathing area for people: swimming is for the dogs. It has more facilities than the Torrox one, so it is worth it if you are looking for a dog toilet area, a dog shower and a play park.
Torre del Mar is about 20 minutes from Milucar along the coast. You can combine it with a stroll along its promenade, which is long and flat.
Motorhome routes with a dog through the Axarquía
With a fixed base in Torrox-Costa you don't need to move the motorhome every day. These are the outings that work best with a dog, from least to most effort.
Torrox-Costa and the lighthouse
The Torrox-Costa promenade is long and flat, ideal for the early-morning walk. If you carry on to the lighthouse, you finish with a swim at the dog beach. It's the daily routine of many motorhomers who spend the winter here.
Torrox village and Frigiliana
The white villages are easy to explore with your dog on the lead: narrow streets, slopes, steps and shady squares. Torrox village is about 10 minutes away by car and Frigiliana about 20. In Frigiliana, the Moorish quarter has lots of steps, so take it slowly with older or very small dogs. If you want to combine it with Nerja and Maro in a single day, here's the route: Nerja, Maro and Frigiliana in a day from Torrox.

Cómpeta and the sierra
Cómpeta, about 30 minutes away, is the gateway to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. Waymarked trails start right from the village. In the sierra, keep your dog on the lead: there is livestock, wildlife and other walkers, and in summer the heat and lack of water are the main risk.
Río Chillar and other water routes
The Chillar river in Nerja is one of the best-known walks in the area, done by walking along the riverbed. Nerja Town Council has kept access to the riverbed closed since August 2023, pending a regulated access system, so check its website before planning it. If it reopens, think of your dog: many hours with paws in the water and on wet stone are more tiring than they seem.
Where your dog can't go
Two of the area's star attractions don't allow dogs. It's worth knowing beforehand so you don't get a surprise at the entrance.
| Place | Dogs allowed? | What the official website says |
|---|---|---|
| Cueva de Nerja | No | No pets allowed, not even in a carrier, except guide dogs (FAQs) |
| Caminito del Rey | No | Pets cannot currently do the walk (pets) |
| Torrox dog beach | Yes | Dogs off the lead and swimming allowed |
| Torre del Mar dog beach | Yes | Fenced-off area for dogs; no swimming for people |
| White villages and promenades | Yes, on the lead | Depending on each town's bylaw |
For the Cueva de Nerja or the Caminito del Rey, the practical approach is to go in turns or leave your dog resting on the pitch with someone from your group. Don't leave it alone inside the motorhome in the heat: even in winter, at midday, the inside heats up a lot under the southern sun.
Heat, timing and your dog's health
- Walk times. From May to October, go out early and at dusk. Tarmac and sand are scorching at midday.
- Fresh water. After a swim in the sea, rinse your dog with fresh water to remove the salt.
- Parasites. There are more parasites in the south than in northern Europe. Before the trip, ask your vet about the right protection for the area.
- Vet. Note down one in Torrox-Costa or Nerja when you arrive. Reception can point you in the right direction.
From Milucar: a base for travelling with your dog
Milucar is a motorhome area in Torrox-Costa, open 365 days a year, where pets are welcome: a maximum of two per pitch is allowed and not all breeds are accepted, so check the conditions in the FAQs before booking. The site is fenced, with a barrier, and the pitches are gravel with wide access lanes.

The beach is less than 100 metres away and the Torrox dog beach, by the lighthouse, about 2 kilometres. There are picnic areas, outdoor showers to rinse off after the sea and a washing machine and dryer for your dog's towels.
| Destination with your dog | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Torrox dog beach (lighthouse) | About 2 km | 5 min |
| Torrox Pueblo | About 6 km | 10 min |
| Nerja centre | About 7 km | 10 min |
| Frigiliana | About 12 km | 20 min |
| Cómpeta | About 20 km | 30 min |
| Torre del Mar dog beach | About 21 km | 20 min |
By motorhome, add a few minutes to each journey. For the mountain villages, a car or motorbike is better if you have one with you: the streets of Frigiliana and Cómpeta aren't designed for large vehicles.
