The difference lies in the area: the western Costa del Sol, from Málaga city to Estepona, is very built-up with little room for motorhomes, while the eastern side is quieter. That's why many motorhomers choose a base in the east and visit the west by car, train or bus.

In this guide you'll find Málaga's winter climate, what each town on the western coast has to offer, how to get around without the motorhome and what to bear in mind to spend the night without any trouble.

The climate for wintering in a motorhome in Málaga

These are the climate normals for Málaga airport, AEMET's reference station for the Málaga coast (1981-2010 period):

Month

Avg. high

Avg. low

Rainfall (mm)

Rainy days

Hours of sunshine

November

20.1 °C

11.3 °C

100

5,6

172

December

17.5 °C

8.9 °C

100

6,6

160

January

16.8 °C

7.4 °C

69

5,8

180

February

17.7 °C

8.2 °C

60

4,8

180

March

19.6 °C

9.8 °C

52

4,0

222

Source: AEMET. In winter you can enjoy it without the summer heat or crowds. With a motorhome, the centre isn't a good idea: better to leave it at the aire and go in by train, bus or small car.

Torremolinos and Benalmádena

They're the first two towns west of the airport. The DGT points out that a motorhome can park like any other vehicle, but town councils can limit parking time and ban camping on their streets (Instruction PROT 2026/04). Putting out an awning, table or chairs already counts as camping.

For long stays, the sensible choice is a motorhome area or a licensed campsite. In Andalusia, overnight motorhome areas are regulated by Decree 26/2018. December and February are very similar, and by March it's close to 20 °C at midday.

Is it easy to park a motorhome on the western Costa del Sol?

Not particularly. It's a very built-up area, with narrow streets in the town centres and by-laws that restrict parking or ban camping. The most convenient option is to settle at an aire or campsite and get around by public transport or in a small vehicle.

Can you get from Málaga to Fuengirola by train?

Yes, on Cercanías line C-1, which leaves from Málaga Centro-Alameda and stops at the airport, Torremolinos and Benalmádena before reaching Fuengirola. Timetables are on the Renfe website.

Is it worth wintering in Málaga city?

The city has a huge amount to see, but for spending months with a motorhome it's more practical to stay outside and go in to visit. From Torrox-Costa, Málaga is about 45 minutes by car and there are ALSA buses.

What day trips can you do in winter from the Málaga coast?

Caminito del Rey, Antequera and El Torcal, Ronda and Granada are the most popular. In winter it's cooler for walking and there are fewer people, though it's wise to buy tickets for the Caminito and the Alhambra in advance.

Your winter base on the Costa del Sol

If you want Málaga's climate with the peace of a seaside town, Milucar is a good base for the whole winter.
