It's free, always open, and from it you can see the Maro cliffs and the Sierras de Tejeda and Almijara. From Torrox-Costa it's about 10 minutes by car, and around it you have the church of El Salvador, the old town and several coves you can walk down to.

We tell you what to see on the Balcón and in Nerja town centre, how to get down to the beaches below and how to plan your trip if you’re travelling by motorhome.

A little history of the Balcón de Europa

Where you now stroll there was once a fortress. According to Nerja Town Council, in the early 16th century the Catholic Monarchs had the so-called Castillo Bajo built on this cliff to watch over and defend the coast. During the Peninsular War the British destroyed it completely, together with La Torrecilla, so that French troops could not make use of it.

The site of the fortress and the walkway leading to it became a circular viewing terrace. Since the 19th century it has been the meeting place for the people of Nerja and a must-see for anyone passing through the town.

Leaning on the railing you’ll see the bronze statue of King Alfonso XII, by Francisco Martín. It commemorates the king’s visit to Nerja after the earthquakes that struck the Axarquía at the end of 1884. Local tradition has it that he was the one who named the viewpoint the “Balcón de Europa”, although the story is disputed.

The coves below the Balcón

What many visitors don't know is that below the viewpoint there are small beaches you can reach in a couple of minutes. They're among the most typical views of Nerja, with boats pulled up on the sand and white houses perched on the rocks.

Playa de Calahonda: to the left of the Balcón as you face the sea. You'll only pay if you use the underground car park or go into a museum.

Why is it called the Balcón de Europa?

Local tradition attributes the name to King Alfonso XII, who visited Nerja after the 1884 earthquakes, although this version is disputed. His statue at the railing commemorates that visit.

How long do I need to see the Balcón and Nerja town centre?

In two or three hours you can see the Balcón, go down to Calahonda, visit the church of El Salvador and stroll around the centre. If you want to eat or swim, allow half a day.

Where do I park my motorhome to visit the Balcón de Europa?

The nearest car park is underground and for cars, and the centre is pedestrianised. The most practical thing is to leave the motorhome at an aire such as Milucar, about 7 km away, and come by car or bus.

Can you get down to the beach from the Balcón?

Yes. You go down to Calahonda by a staircase from the end of Calle Puerta del Mar, and from there a walkway below the Balcón leads to Playa de El Salón. La Caletilla is on the other side, about 60 metres away.

If you want to explore Nerja at your own pace and come back every night to sleep by the sea, book your pitch at Milucar, in Torrox-Costa, 10 minutes from the Balcón de Europa.

El mirador más famoso de Nerja, las calas que hay debajo, la iglesia de El Salvador y el casco antiguo, con consejos para llegar desde Torrox-Costa sin mover la autocaravana.

[6

post-1186","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-que-ver-cerca
["GET
