You reach it on foot from above, as you can't drive down, and in high season the town council runs a shuttle bus. It's best to go early, on a weekday or outside the summer; from Torrox-Costa it's less than 20 minutes away.

It's one of the most beautiful beaches on the Málaga coast and, precisely because of that, it gets packed in July and August. Here's how to get there, where to park, what facilities it has and what else to see nearby.

What Playa de Maro is like

Nerja's tourist office describes it as a fairly large, isolated sandy beach with no buildings around it and moderate waves. The water is usually very clear, and the surrounding cliffs give it the wild-cove look that has made it so famous.

Detail

Playa de Maro

Length

About 500 m

Width

About 20 m

Sand

Dark, medium-grained

Swimming

Moderate waves

Setting

Isolated, within the Natural Site

Facilities

Parking at the top, kiosks, beach bars, showers, bins, cleaning and water sports

Access

On foot; shuttle bus in high season

Photo: Turismo de Nerja / Diputación de Málaga

Kayaking and paddleboarding by the cliffs

Water sports are among the beach's facilities, and in season it's common to see groups in kayaks or on paddleboards exploring the cliffs. Its cliffs reach 75 metres in height and alternate with small coves that can only be reached on foot. It is highly valued for its geology and for the biodiversity both in and out of the water.

Photo: Turismo de Nerja / Diputación de Málaga

That means behaving here as you would in any natural area: take your rubbish home, leave nothing on the rocks and respect the signs. If you're looking for more coves, the tourist office also mentions Molino de Papel and Las Alberquillas, which you walk down to and which are usually much quieter.

How to get to Playa de Maro from Milucar

Maro is about 12 km from Milucar, around 18 minutes by car on the A-7 or the N-340 towards Almería. The beach lies below the village, a few minutes' walk from the Cueva de Nerja.

By car: where to park

You can't drive down to the sand. In summer, Nerja Town Council restricts vehicle access to the beaches of Maro and La Caleta for safety reasons. Only public transport, emergency services and authorised owners are allowed through.

Shuttle bus in high season. In summer a shuttle bus runs down to the beach (when it was launched, from 10:00 to 20:00), together with a car park near the access checkpoint.

Car park at the entrance to Maro. The council opened a 100-space surface car park at the western entrance to the village to manage traffic, especially in summer.

Shuttle and parking arrangements may change from one season to the next. Before you go, check for updates on the website of Nerja Town Council or on the beach's official page.

And with the motorhome?

In Maro space is tight, the village streets are narrow and access to the beach is restricted in summer. The practical thing is to leave the motorhome hooked up on its pitch and come by car, motorbike or bike. If you're combining the beach with the Cueva de Nerja, bear in mind that the cave car park takes caravans, but only for the visit and during opening hours.

By bus

The bus stops right outside Milucar, on the coast road, and ALSA buses to Nerja leave from Torrox-Costa bus station. Some N-340 routes stop at ‘Maro Empalme’, from where you walk up to the village. Check timetables and stops at alsa.es.

When to go to Playa de Maro

Time of year

What it's like

Tip

July and August

Very busy, regulated access and shuttle bus

Arrive first thing or late in the afternoon, ideally on a weekday

June and September

Good weather and slightly fewer people

The best time for a relaxed swim

October to May

Quiet, often without seasonal facilities

Ideal for strolling, taking photos and walking down without the crowds

A practical point: you walk down, and the walk back up is hard going in the heat. In high season a shuttle bus runs and there's parking at the entrance to Maro.

How long does it take from Torrox-Costa?

From Milucar it's about 12 km and around 18 minutes by car to Maro. Add a few minutes to park and walk down.

Does Playa de Maro have facilities?

According to the official listing, it has kiosks, beach bars, showers, bins, cleaning and water sports, plus parking at the top. Out of season some facilities may not be available.

What's the best time to go?

In summer, first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, ideally on a weekday. Outside July and August you can go at any time and it's fairly quiet.

Can you go kayaking at Playa de Maro?

Yes, the beach offers water sports and it's common to explore the cliffs by kayak or paddleboard. It's a protected area, so respect the wildlife and don't touch the rocks or plants.

If you want to come back to Maro several times and alternate with beach days in Torrox, book your pitch at Milucar and leave the motorhome less than 100 metres from the sea.

Todo lo práctico para ir a la playa de Maro, en el Paraje Natural de los Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo: acceso a pie, lanzadera, aparcamiento, servicios y qué ver cerca.

[6

post-1170","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-que-ver-cerca
["GET
